The Native Sounds of Friendship

The dragon
who never works on Sundays
likes to wear her wedding dress
and spit fireballs out to sea
The hissing of the steam
and the lapping of the waves
bring comfort after a stressful week
She waits for her lover
Hoping he will return
but deep down
she knows that he has gone forever
These are the sounds
These are the native sounds of friendship, brother.

The trees
would often shake their branches
Moving to their own secret rhythms
Some say it is just the wind
but we know differently
The animals and birds
know the songs of the forest
Sometimes they will join the chorus
Sometimes they are content to just listen
or just dance to the music of the trees
These are the sounds
These are the native sounds of friendship, brother.

In space
No-one can hear you scream
So I will never know
whether you heard me cry out
when you cut the rope
and I will never know
if you shed a tear
as my lifeline trickled through your fingers
“Houston, we have a problem!”
Perhaps I am still drifting
but I think that my heart is still beating
For this is the sound
This is the native sound of friendship, brother.

The butterflies
have no concept of time or space
They see the sun and dance
They are the children of the forest
forever laughing
In innocence they will beat their wings
unaware of the consequences for Japan
or the lonely dragon on the seashore
or the astronaut drifting further and further from the Earth
In innocence they will beat their wings
For this is the sound
This is the native sound of friendship, brother
